Community Horticulture and Cider Making (CHCM) Project is a service activity, developed by Tea House Gardens, a Nevada Department of Agriculture certified commodity and egg producer in Washoe Valley, NV. The activities of CHCM are to identify, restore, and return northwestern Nevada heritage apple groves back into production, while educating a workforce in the care, and harvest of this specialty crop.

This project website, and all associated material, is supported in part by the Nevada State Department of Agriculture. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the Nevada State Department of Agriculture, Plant Division or the State of Nevada.

Our Team

Heritage tree owners, THG ownrs, and project volunteers make up the CHCM community team in Northern Nevada. The CHCM project is seeking owners of heritage apple groves as well as volunteers for the project

Volunteers

Recruiting and training community volunteers to learn and practice horticultural restorative care, Integrated Pest Management ( IPM) practices, and demonstrate the ability to participate as a team member in maintaining care of the heritage apple trees at enrolled sites.

The Project

Presenting an annual community cider-making event to market and promote Eastern Sierra Nevada apple production as a specialty crop, and to educate our community about heritage apples within the Northern Nevada food shed.

Future

Our strategy for the future is to identify property owners in our region where cuttings from restored heritage trees can be grafted onto rootstock for production and easier maintenance.  Committed volunteers, working with the project, will learn how to care for these trees and share their knowledge with others.
